Come join me at the Pendleton Public Library for a talk about a little-known incident in Pendleton history - one which both Frederick Douglass and John C. Calhoun monitored and which was designed to terrorize Black people and white people alike.
From the Library Events page:
Learn about a fiery chapter in Pendleton's local history. Dr. Susanna Ashton from Clemson University will discuss an 1849 post office raid to seize antislavery pamphlets and the subsequent bonfire on the village green by a group of white supremacists. Learn how this event happened, who was involved, and why it's relevant today.
Light refreshments to follow.
Registration requested but not required. Those who register will receive a reminder email 24 hours before the event.
Sponsored by the Pendleton Historic Foundation and Pendleton Foundation for Black History & Culture.
