# 12: Teaching the Rhetoric of Fugitivity with annotated advertisements for freedom seekers

I cannot do layout or design! ha ha ha ha - this took me 1000 hours and it is terrible. But it was an experiment in trying to create a class handout. the first page was supposed to be the advertisements without any commentary and we would discuss and annotate as a class, then we would refer to these prepared annotations and compare what we had caught and what we might have missed. Then we would go look at a few more and see how to apply some of these notions…..This particular handout never quite worked but I’ve held onto it as a prototype for the future…..I’ve seen students get really hyped and angry and sharply analytical as they work through these and they bring to bear close readings I didn’t always know they were capable of…so I’m not giving up on this exercise.

I’d love to hear from any of you who have tried similar class exercises….
